The following are descriptions of actual calls to the LARC hotline. Names have been changed to protect client confidentiality.
Helen called LARC for help because she was having difficulty using her Section 8 housing certificate to rent an apartment. She and her child were at risk of homelessness. LARC advised Helen how to file for a restraining order to prevent the landlord from renting the apartment to another tenant after he had already agreed to rent it to her. Based upon LARC's advice, Helen filed her motion pro se. Despite opposition from the landlords attorney, Helen was granted a temporary restraining order, followed by a court order requiring the landlord to find her an apartment. As a result, Helen and her child were able to move into an affordable apartment.
Eileen lives in an apartment building in Boston owned by an absentee landlord. She called LARC when the water in the entire six unit building was shut off because the landlord owed so much money to the city. LARC explained how to go to housing court to request a court order restoring the service. Eileen did so and the court ordered the service restored.
Yolanda called LARC because she wanted to get custody of her stepson, age 14, and she did not know what to do. The child's father (her husband) had died and the child had not had contact with his biological mother in many years. LARC explained how to file for a guardianship and referred her to a pro bono resource at the probate court for additional assistance in preparing her papers. As a result, Yolanda was able to file for a guardianship at the court.
